Building a Healthier World

The internet has done nothing if not given us more information than we ever thought existed.  In most cases, this has changed our lives for the better.  Information regarding infectious diseases that strike adults and children has allowed many of us to develop healthy strategies to protect ourselves from some of the most common of these diseases.  Still, it is important to recognize some of the most prevalent infectious diseases and to understand their symptoms and transmission methods.

  1. Chicken Pox:  We all think of Chicken Pox as a disease that strikes children, but the truth is chicken pox is becoming more and more common in teenagers and even adults.  Direct contact with an infected person causes the familiar rash of pox like sores.
  2. Strep Throat: While most of us think of Strep Throat as little more than an aggregation, it is actually one of the most common infectious diseases in America.  Swollen tonsils, difficulty swallowing, fever and more really mean more adults need time off work to recover.  Avoid this problem by avoiding direct contact with the infection.
  3. Hepatitis:  Another common infectious disease in America is Hepatitis.  While there are three different forms (A, B and C), each with different transmission modes, common methods of prevention work well for hepatitis.
  4. Pneumonia:  Another common disease is pneumonia.  This can affect one or both lungs and can cause minor problems to serious breathing complications.  A doctor must treat pneumonia and prevention is largely an issue of staying away from infected persons.

Common sense measures including frequent hand washing, staying away from infected people and eating and sleeping properly also play a large role in keeping healthy.  These practices are particularly important for those with weakened immune systems such as the elderly and infants although everyone should use caution.

Infectious diseases can quickly decimate a person’s health and, even worse, rapidly spread throughout a community.  Taking proper care to prevent the spread of infectious diseases is very important.  Building a healthier world starts with preventing the spread of infectious diseases.
