Substance abuse is prevalent in youth and adults alike. Whether it is a teenager going to the local school, the middle aged man next door or the senior citizen you meet at the local convenience store, anyone can fall victim of addiction. People get addicted to all kinds of things. From the obvious illegal drugs and alcohol to prescription drugs and even food.

One of the major causes of addiction is high levels of stress. With hectic lifestyles, long working hours, and broken relationships becoming more common, people find it all the more difficult to make time for themselves. Mental pressure builds up when one faces financial tensions, peer pressure and family discords. Mental and physical stress both combine to put a person into a state of depression. This is all the more applicable for people living in major cities where families are not as closely knit as in the suburbs. In places like California where people live a busy life, it is vital for one to de-stress from time to time in order to avoid getting into a state where they are vulnerable to addictions.

Although the business world is stiff with competition, one needs to somehow make enough time to dedicate to some form of relaxation. This could be simple leisurely habits like reading, watching your favorite show or movie or cooking up a treat for yourself. Whenever possible, try going out with friends and family, maybe a trip to the beach or the local recreational club. Women feel extremely relaxed when they go for a girls’ night or a shopping spree. On weekends, take time out for lengthier activities, preferably outdoors like picnics, fishing, camping with loved ones. Loneliness often leads to depressed emotions and might push one towards an addiction. De-stressing is vital for sober living in California and other such states where people have stress levels due to busy lives.
