One of the hardest things to do as a parent of a kid with a disability is to figure out how to make sure they are always getting the best treatment possible. This isn’t always easy but it is certainly necessary. So the question is: how do you find a doctor you trust to help you out with your child? The answer is in remembering these three things.
Get Someone With Experience – This seems like it’s easy enough but you want to make sure your doctor has an extensive background in exactly what you are dealing with. Having a doctor who specializes in autism but you have a child with Downs doesn’t seem to lend itself to the best possible care. Make sure you know what their background is and what makes them a specialist in their field. Knowing this will give you peace of mind.
Get Someone Your Child Responds To – This isn’t as important as making sure that the doctor is good but if this is someone you are looking to help your child for the long haul then it should be someone you child feels comfortable being around. If they are not then there might be a bigger issue and it will make all future interactions with the doctor uncomfortable for you and the child and it’s too long a process to be okay with that.
Get Someone Convenient if Possible – This also isn’t as important but if you are going to be seeing the doctor on any sort of consistent basis, make sure it is someone who is local and not someone who you have to drive out of your way to get to. This is a very important part of the process. You are stressed enough with your child, you don’t need to make fighting traffic another stressor for you.
