If your child or a loved one that you care for has a developmental disability then you know that there are many serious choices you have to make. One of the choices that is the hardest is when you start figuring out what kind of school your child should be going to. This has a lot of pros and cons and the outcome could be crucial to the next 20 years of your childs life. Assuming there are at a stage in their development where it is even possible to go to school then deciding the right school is crucial to them. Here are some things to keep in mind:
Is their program noteworthy? — This matters because you don’t want your child at a place where there is nothing that is good or noteworthy about the program. Does the city or the state recognize it as a great program or is it fairly new and not really established as a program yet? These might not seem like important questions but they are things to note when you are making a difficult decision.
What is the faculty turnover like? — One thing you would like to see your child get is consistency. Having a new teacher every single year, especially when you go from a teacher that really connected to your child to a teacher that has not connected or might not connect, those things matter more to a child that might need more comfort.
Ask what the student to teacher ratio is — In a specialty program there is certainly a smaller number of students to teachers but there should be a very small number so that they can maximize the time spent with the teacher. Making sure your child has the best possible education is so important and you need to make sure you pick the right school.
