People with disabilities are just like any other. They deserve to be treated fairly. Like everyone else, they deserve to have a good quality of life, and they deserve endless opportunities. They also do not deserve to be underestimated. Should you encounter individuals with disabilities, there are some things that you can do to insure that your meeting goes well.
Talk Normally
When you encounter people with disabilities, talk normally. There is no need to talk to them like they are stupid. They are worthy of being treated with dignity, and talking normally will be one way that you can treat them with dignity.
Be Respectful
When you encounter people with disabilities, be respectful to them. Use manners and treat them with politeness, just the same as you will when you encounter people without disabilities. Don’t shout at them or speak to them in a demeaning tone. In short, treat them as you want to be treated.
Do Not Underestimate Them
When you encounter people with disabilities, it is easy to assume that they are incapable of nothing at all. This especially happens when you lack knowledge about disabilities. Before you assume that disabled people are completely and totally incapable, why not talk to them, get to know them, and see what they are capable of doing. You may be pleasantly surprised.
Do Not Pity Them
People with disabilities like to be noticed for their good attributes. They do not like to be pitied. If you feel the need to pity them, do not do it.
Encountering people with disabilities may be immensely scary, especially if it is your first time. Please understand, there is no need to be afraid of them. They are not diseased, and they do not bite. They just want your friendship and your kindness. They just want to fit in.
